4 things Sony can do to increase console and game sales

1. Price Drop

As of now, both Microsoft and Nintendo have a console in the $200 range. Sony on the other hand is still up there in the $400 range. Reports show that PS3 and 360 actually evened out worldwide in sales for the year of 2008 with 360 being slightly ahead. Now if Sony can actually stay in the game with a price of $400 imagine how well the PS3 would sell if it was $299. That sounds like a pretty sweet spot.

2. Marketing

What happened Sony? It seemed Sony marketing was on top for awhile at one point until it all just vanished until the last couple days of 2008 where they made new commercials.

Where did the team that made this go?

Sony needs a lot more of that.

Now reports are saying Sony is starting to step up their game in the marketing department starting with the Superbowl commercials. I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to see what they have in store. The Killzone 2 Superbowl commercial is already out but I think they may have one more in there.A commercial dealing with the PS3 itself. I would love to see what they can come up with now. Tomorrow is the big day. Guess we will have to wait until then.

3. Releasing games at the right time

We all know Sony has had some problems with releasing games at the right time. I still remember when it was the beginning of 2007 and we were all excited that MGS4 and Killzone 2 were going to release for the holidays. It’s 2009 and Killzone 2 is less then one month away.

2008 was a great year for Sony kicking things off with Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4 but one thing that wasn’t so great was releasing so many games in the holidays of 2008.

Resistance2, Little Big Planet, Fallout 3, Farcry2, Gears of War2, Fable 2, and the list goes on and on. They need to spread out the list a tad more. It was hard for me to buy all the games I wanted but I think I managed to do it.

One thing everyone can agree on is the release of Home. When did we first see home again? Two years ago back in 2007? Both Sony and fans of PS3 know that was a mistake to show so early. It’s out for everyone now and getting mixed reviews. Everyone knows though it has the potential to be big even if it isn’t showing it at this point. I’m sure we will see major improvements for Home in the coming months and years.

4. Add more features

Mmm, more features. I love the sound of that. I think we all can agree that the Playstation Network is a great free service. It does lack some things that the competitor has. A couple of features I and others would love to see are the addition of in game private chat. For those who dont know, in game private chat gives you the ability to talk to a friend basically whenever you want while you are on your system. You dont even have to be playing the same game to talk to one another. Another feature I would like to see are advanced player profiles. As of now it doesnt tell much about the user or the games he is into. I’d like to know more about people and what genres or games they are into. A couple months ago I made a concept design of something I’d like to see.

Not amazing but it is an improvement. Another small feature I would like is custom avatars. Instead of my Helghast avatar I would like a picture of me or a picture of something funny. Yeah, some people may put their private parts but Sony can add a mod feature with it as well.

Features like these could make the PSN an amazing experience. I am positive that down the road we will see all of these added at one point or another. Heck, we may even see private chat added in the 3.0 firmware update if things go right.
