The Three Factions of PS3's MAG

Zipper Interactive's massive Playstation 3 shooter MAG isn't just about having 256 players in a single battle at a time. There's more nuance than that. Take for instance the three factions in the game.

In this video, Zipper developers walk us through the three private military companies that make up the factions of MAG. The Raven PMC is described as high-tech and polished. Valor is a more traditional military force and S.V.E.R. is sort of like a... gang? Hmm, not so sure about that last one.

Pachter: WiiHD still coming, Xbox in third by 2015

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter is no stranger to the gaming scene. In fact, it's his job to guesstimate, speculate, and estiguess on all things gaming, and in his latest report (via IndustryGamers), he paints the future for all three console manufacturers.

First up is Nintendo, a company that Pachter believes will remain in the top spot throughout this console generation. Due to the Wii's "low price point, innovative control mechanism, and compatibility with standard definition televisions." Pachter thinks that Nintendo will rest easy atop the gaming mountain. And he thinks the Wii HD is a big part of it, as Pachter firmly believes Nintendo will introduce a HD-compatible Wii at some point, even as early as next year.

Then there's Sony and its PS3. Pointing to Sony's win in the Blu-ray vs HD DVD war, Pachter says the PS3 will capture "significant market share" through this alone, and says the company will take second place. Regardless, Pachter sees the PS3 and Xbox 360 sharing very similar market share at the conclusion of this generation.

Moving on to Microsoft, Pachter believes the company will end this generation in third, largely due to the console's inability to sell in Japan. Pachter downplays the "losing" angle, however, stating that he believes Microsoft will sell twice as many Xbox 360s as the company did the original Xbox, which, granted it actually happens, would be a nice feather in Microsoft's cap.

Fable 3 designer gets married and ... wait a minute!

Last Friday's New York Times "Wedding/Celebrations" section announced the nuptials of Ms. Amy Gilbert (who is studying for her Ph.D. in molecular medicine in London) and Joshua Atkins, the "lead game designer for Fable III." Would this be be first tandem wedding and game announcement? Although Fable III doesn't officially exist, Atkins has been with Lionhead since Fable and is listed as a part of the design team at Microsoft Game Studios in the Fable II manual.

This isn't the first time Fable III has been unofficially mentioned: British talk show host Jonathan Ross tweeted in March that he was approached to do voice work for the game. Of course, we've contacted Microsoft for confirmation of Fable III's development. We absolutely can't wait until the company pulls "we don't comment on rumor and speculation" on this one.

PS: From all of us at Joystiq: Congratulations to the happy couple!

Update: Microsoft's official statement: "We have nothing to announce regarding future Lionhead Studios projects."

Sony Patents Method To Emulate PS2 On PS3

My single biggest problem with the PS3? The loss of backwards compatibility. It's a gaping hole in the system's feature set. Then again, it may also be one that's on the way back.

Some background: when the PS3 first launched, it was backwards-compatible, meaning you could play PlayStation 2 games on your new PlayStation 3. The 20GB and 60GB units released in North America and Japan featured hardware emulation (they literally had a PS2 chip inside), while those released in PAL territories featured software emulation (similar to how the 360 handles original Xbox games).

Later, though, this feature was removed. Anyone buying a 40GB, a later model of the 80GB or the 120GB PS3 can't play a single PS2 game on them. It was a stupid, stupid move on the part of Sony.

A patent discovered by Siliconera, however, suggests that Sony might be re-thinking this stance. Filed in December 2008, it's basically a patent for a method that would allow the PS3's Cell chip to translate code from the PS2's Emotion Engine. Not half-assed software emulation (which in previous PS3 models couldn't run some games), full, total replication of the functionality of the Emotion Engine.

Which means, theoretically at least, you could play any PS2 game on any PS3, regardless of the model or year of release.

Whether this would allow you to play actual PS2 discs, or would just be the advance party for the sale of PS2 downloads on the PlayStation Store is unclear. We'd like the former, but with Sony being a business and all, would expect the latter.

Sony expands 'Official Licensing Program' for PlayStation peripherals, accessories

Sony Computer Entertainment is expanding its licensing program for PlayStation peripherals and accessories. It basically means that if a peripheral manufacturer conforms to "qualifying SCE standard and requirements," it can make gadgets and gizmos aplenty, whosits and whatsits galore! You want thingamabobs? They'll make plenty! But, who cares? No big deal. We want mooooooooooore.

Entering into a licensing agreement with SCE will give manufacturers the "technical documentations" needed to make products for PSP, PS3 and the PS2. Plus, when the product goes to market, it'll even get the spiffy "Official Licensed Product logo." We can't wait to see what third-party manufacturers come up with over the next few months.

Dramasetter Review: Heavenly Sword - More Then A God of War Clone

nariko
Yeah Yeah Yeah..I know. Its been almost 2 years since this game came out but I just got my PS3 and now i get to review games for it so deal with it. Ok now thats out the way lets continue on with the review. Let's start of by saying that i went into the game thinking it was a female version of God of War but that quickly changed as Sony delievered one of the most refreshing and original titles i played in a while with one major flaw.
STORY:
The story begins with the main character, Nariko, dying in the middle of the battlefield in what looks like a Lord of the Rings scenerio with thousands of mens on screen attacking you. Not much is known until you start playing events that happened from 5 days prior to the incident. We quickly learn that a group of thieves are after Nariko's clan and villages to seek out a sword to give to the evil Bohen, who is the game top notch villain. Nariko soon possesses the sword knowing its consequences- the more she fights and uses it, the more quickly she ends up dying. The characters in the story are unique. Nariko is the sexxy hero-ness of the game, Kai is her "weird" little sister that protects and needs protection, and Bohan has to be one of the most funniest and evil-est bad guy ever. This guy humor is crazy, kinda of like the Joker from the Dark Knight. Story is tight and simple, but limited because the ending is the beginning.
GRAPHICS/MUSIC:
The PS3 showcases a beautiful looking environments for the system. The scenery is actually jaw dropping and fits right in the mood of a Roman-Greco Era. The flow in Nariko's hair is fascinating and defitnley one of the coolest thing you'll ever see. The music fits the right tone of the moment you are playing in and the score is pretty descent.
GAMEPLAY:
The game mechanics might have a similiar feel to God of War's but that's where it stops. The control scheme is broken into three diffrent catergories with speed, raging and power stance. Each stance can be activated by holding the R1 or L1 buttons then inputing a chain of button sequence to unleash combos. Kick ass combos at that. They even utilze the Six Axis control scheme to solve puzzles throughtout the game. Cool.
The main problem with this game is that its extremely short. Im talking about 4-5 hours short. It was easy except for the final boss and a few of the Six Axis scene. The diffuclty fails big time making this game easier to beat in no time, especially of your a God of War vet. Once you complete the game you unlock Hell Mode, which is basically the Hard Mode of the game and thats it. Nothing special seeming how its all the same.
OVERALL:
Heavenly Sword couldve been Sony next hot franchise, had they wouldnt killed the character at the beggining. Its not a bad game by any means, it couldve been longer and they couldve added major replay value for the game and it wouldve been a classic. By the time you get involved with the charcaters the game ends and yeah it does end with no room for a sequel. Suxxs. NOT WORTH the 49.99 price tag it has, spend about 20-30 dollars if you can find it and you'll be in for a treat. Truly a gem.
RATING>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>8. out of 10

This Wednesday: Worms 2: Armageddon, King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match attack XBLA

XBLA is dropping a holy hand grenade's worth of violence this week with Worms 2: Armageddon and King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match. Whether you're into vertebrate or spineless carnage, the entry fee to these glorious celebrations of hurt will cost 800 ($10) apiece.

Armageddon brings some upgrades to the original Worms XBLA title, so definitely check it out if you're a fan of the series. As for KOF98, the game is about $10 cheaper than the PS2 release, and does support online play -- but there's never a guarantee on how that'll go.

PS3 Serious Sam HD could happen if consumers want it

Speaking to G4, Croteam CEO Roman Ribaric said the company originally also wanted to do a PSN version of Serious Sam HD alongside the PC and XBLA releases, but cited time constraints as the major factor holding it back. "[We] couldn't get additional financing to support [the] extra development time needed," said Ribaric. "It was either to do PSN by the same date or forget about it."

Luckily, Croteam hasn't gone with the latter and hasn't completely ruled out releasing a PSN port sometime after the PC and XBLA versions. The Croteam CEO says he's heard from different offices in the industry that consumers are disenchanted with late ports; however, he's still interested in listening to what PS3 owners think. Is it worthwhile for Croteam to pursue? Would you wait for the PSN version? Send Croteam an e-mail or maybe start a petition online -- this might be one of the few times developers will actually listen.

PS3 owners, would you buy a late version of Serious Sam HD?

UK chart get: Fight Night Round 4 pummels competition

The sweet science enjoys a fondness in the United Kingdom, as EA Sports' Fight Night Round 4 enjoyed quite a debut this past week by bobbing and weaving its way to the top, according to Chart Track data. In fact, what makes this even more impressive is that Fight Night Round 4 is the first boxing game ever to reach the top spot on the All Formats chart. We guess our mother was wrong; violence may not solve everything, but it will solve the problem of wondering what type of game will sell extremely well in the UK.

Best Buy selling 80GB PS3 with LittleBigPlanet and Wall-E

Best. Bundle. Ever.

Seriously, if you haven't picked up a PS3 yet, there's no need to wait for an oft-rumored price cut. For $399, Best Buy's offering an 80GB PS3 bundled with a copy of Media Molecule's DIY platformer, LittleBigPlanet, and Pixar's cautionary environmental tale, Wall-E. That's about $90 worth of complimentary adorability -- an offer that we find difficult to pass up. Just look at those big button/robot eyes. How can you say no? Awwww.

This is just a recap on the nintendo dsi launch

Xbox Live Deal of the Week: Fable 2's Knothole Island

For all of you wannabe Meteorologists out there, the problematic weather of Fable 2's Knothole Island awaits you and all of your cunning, as the Lionhead community blog reveals the DLC will be discounted up until July 5. Normally 800, the DLC will receive a price cut of 30%, knocking it down to a more manageable 560.

You already know our thoughts on the DLC, so we suggest you stock up on mainland items and head to Knothole Island for some rare goodies in the Box of Secrets. And, you know, tackle a dungeon or three.

NintendoWare Weekly: Water Warfare in for a Reel Fishing Challenge

It wouldn't be Monday without new games to download across Nintendo platforms. This week's highlight is definitely Hudson's first-person soaker, Water Warfare. It's a neat concept, but we really think Hudson could've spent some time tightening up the graphics in level three.

Gallery:

DSiWare
  • Sudoku Master (Hudson, 1 player, 500 DSi Points): It's Sudoku, with 150 different puzzles to play and a focus geared toward beginners. It's for the six people who don't own Brain Age.
WiiWare
  • Water Warfare (Hudson, 1 - 8 players, 800 Wii Points): Water Warfare combines the cleaning power of H2O with the intensity of competitive combat. Featuring online support and two-player splitscreen, you and your friends can soak each other without having to worry about that weird kid filling up his gun with something other than water.
  • Reel Fishing Challenge (Natsume, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Featuring two different ways to play (free play mode lets you play at your own pace, mission mode offers, well, missions). What better way to put your Dorf instructional videos to the test?
  • Silver Star Reversi (Agetec, 1 - 2 players, 500 Wii Points): Go head-to-head against a CPU or human opponent in this, uh, game. We'd tell you what kind of game it is, but the press release really doesn't say, like, anything.
Virtual Console
Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa (Sega Master System, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): The follow-up to a popular shmup, Fantasy Zone II brings more of the same in the sequel. There's bright, colorful sprites, lots of enemies to shoot, and plenty of toe-tapping tunes. Even though it's another shmup on a service over-saturated by the genre, we can't be too upset. It's Fantasy Zone, after all.

New Resonance of Fate screens feature anthropomorphic canines

It's not often we're able to do this so long before a game is released -- before we've ever even seen the game on a screen other than the Joystiq Blogtop 3000s™ we're assigned -- but we can categorically name Resonance of Fate as our game of the year as of this morning. Why, you ask? Three simple words, friends: Dogs wearing jackets.

New screens of the game, coming from Japan (likely from End of Eternity, the Japanese title of RoF), look, in certain cases, a bit less than thrilling. Sure, the game's CG trailer looked like 95405000 yen, but we're talking still shots of RPG gameplay here -- not exactly life-altering stuff. That being said, well, there's a dog. And he's wearing a jacket!

Mars for Xbox 360 still dependent on publisher support

An Xbox 360 version of developer Spiders' upcoming game, Mars, may be planned, but apparently there's currently no work being done on it. Destructoid spoke with Spiders CEO Jehanne Rousseau, who said that the company sorta needs a publisher to fund the project first.

Rousseau explained that the developer is currently shopping for a publisher and will give a "final answer" on an Xbox 360 version when it has a contract in hand -- or lack thereof. Bucking the trend, Spiders is developing Mars for PS3 because it's a "very complicated platform." Hopefully, the extra work will put it in the company of Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch -- and not that of the ill-fated Factor 5 and Free Radical.

EA Might Let You Remap Fight Night — Through DLC

How'd we miss this? In a chat a couple weeks back on IGN, Fight Night Round 4 producer Brian Hayes said that remapping the face buttons to throw punches might be "an option via DLC."

His full reply:

There is no option for face button punching in the final version, but we are investigating providing the option via DLC.

Now, no one said specifically that the face-button option would be paid DLC. But one would have to wonder why EA would give this away for free.

I used the face-button option in Round 3 liberally, as it was the only way for me to get through the damned punching-dummy minigame. Withholding it as an option from Round 4, and hinting that it may come back through DLC doesn't create a lot of gamer goodwill.

In the rest of his answers, Hayes' indicates that a dedicated DLC team will also be whipping up additional boxer customizations, if not real fighters who were not included in the official roster. That's OK. But making people pay or wait for controller schemes is kind of shitty, if not unprecedented.

Win Prizes in 1 vs. 100 Next Week? [Update]

Last night on 1 vs. 100, it sounds like host Chris Cashman let slip that this coming week the game show's beta is over, and players can finally take home Microsoft points.

The accidental leak came after The One, as many have been wont to do during the beta, either ignored or didn't remember the caution that choosing the money over the Mob results in a big fat zilch toward your MS points balance. Cash prizes are not being awarded in Beta. So Cashman jumped on the mike at a break to tsk-tsk about that, and overshared a little.

According to Xboxic, which was playing when it happened, Cashman reminded the players that "prizes cannot be be won until next week!

Having realised what he just said, the host mumbled his words and continued to speak at a faster pace - then announced again for us to watch out next week when a huge announcement is coming for 1 vs 100, before continuing to babble on about his lack of an original gamertag to move away from the subject!

I've emailed a Microsoft rep to see if they want to take a swing at this. At minimum, I'd expect some sort of announcement soon on a full 1 vs. 100 release.

Update: Reader LuppyLuptonium says he was in the same game and disputes Xboxic's account. Here's his take:

I was playing from the crowd. He didn't say that there would be no prizes til next week. He said tune in for a big announcement next week. Whoever sent that tip is mistaken ... I just walked over to my girlfriend in the other room who was playing with me and she said she didn't hear that either.

In fact later he addressed the people getting skyrocketing scores, citing it is a bug and needs to be fixed before they can start giving gamer points away.

So there you have it - I guess we can say "look for a big announcement." But whether it's the full release of 1 vs. 100 is in dispute.

Microsoft beta testing Avatar awards

Joystiq tipsters -- and Xbox.com regulars -- have noticed a strange Beta 2009 icon appearing on some Xbox 360 'Played Games' profiles. While speculation (or hopes and dreams) was that the icon was related to something important, sources tell Joystiq that Microsoft is internally testing Avatar awards. Sorry, no megatons here.

From what we've been told, the test is an executable built for Beta users to play with the awards program before it launches. Avatar awards are triggered by in-game achievements: when a player unlocks an award -- clothing was the only specific award mentioned -- it is made available in the Avatar customization menu of the NXE. Select Xbox 360 users are already sporting fancy new threads, which are presumably related to this beta test.

Avatar awards were one of the many new features coming to the NXE revealed at E3 2009 -- including the smart evil idea of charging users for the real "cool" stuff.

Microsoft honoring MJ with free Thriller video download

We're all still reeling from the passing of the King of Pop, but fortunately, Microsoft's got a nice (albeit brief) memorial for Michael Jackson up on Xbox Live. This weekend only, the Video Marketplace is giving away the full, ten-minute version of MJ's classic "Thriller" music video for your viewing pleasure. Yep, the greatest music video of all time is free to download until the end of the day today.

It's a nice gesture -- but why not just make the video permanently free? We're not sure these wounds will heal in such a short period of time.

Blockbuster selling high-end PS3 bundles

We were sent a tip regarding a new PS3 bundle that Blockbuster was supposedly selling, so we headed on down to our local chain to snoop around. What we found was the above image showing off a PS3 bundle consisting of a 40gb console, Transformers: The Game, Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray, PS3 remote, HDMI cable, and a 12-week rental card (which allows you to rent one movie each week), all for $359.99. What makes this such an odd story, however, is that this bundle isn't offered at every Blockbuster store.

We called another nearby chain and quizzed an employee on his store's bundle. He said that particular store offered a 80gb console, with Transformers: The Game, Click Blu-ray, PS3 remote, HMDI cable, and a 12-week rental card, all for $499.99. So, it would seem that each store has a bit of leeway with its bundle package. If you're in the market for a PS3 and thinking Blockbuster, give them a call before you head down. Both stores we talked to were all sold out.

eBay selling 12 months of Xbox Live for $27.99

eBay is running another one of its daily deals, this time offering 12+1 months of Xbox Live Gold membership for the very reasonable price of $27.99. Compare that to the full price of $49.99, and we don't have to tell you how appealing this deal is. So, if you're going to take the plunge, act now. The deal ends Jun 28, at 8AM PDT.

Capcom puts Marvel vs Capcom 2 release near 'the end of July'

Further clarifying reports from nearly two months ago surrounding the release of Marvel vs Capcom 2 on XBLA/PSN, Capcom's Twitter account is putting the game's digital release "closer to the end of July." Oddly enough, the statement claims to not know where the "rumor" came from, though Marvel Entertainment's Q1 2009 financial report (sourced below) was clearly the culprit.

In the month or so you have before the game releases, you should probably head over to Shoryuken's MvC2 forums to find out how badly you're going to get stomped online. And yes, you will get stomped. We all will.

Capcom creates countdown-free teaser site

Hate countdowns? Love mysterious teaser sites that barely hint at an upcoming game? Good, because Capcom cooked this one ready for your perusal. The number 1560 simply fades in and out, moving from left to right. While some are postulating it's another Onimusha game (the first game took place in the year 1560, and is based on the Battle of Okehazama), we'll use the power of Wikipedia to show us some of the more interesting things that happened in 1560:
  • "Denmark buys the Estonian island of Saaremaa from its last prince bishop."
  • "The first tulip bulb is brought from Turkey to the Netherlands."
  • "Jean Nicot introduces tobacco in the form of snuff to the French court."
Hmm. Okay, we'd rather have an Onimusha game, Capcom.

Report: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 Prices Slashed In Fall

Anyone not expecting a price cut on the PlayStation 3 this year? How about the Xbox 360? Well, if Ars Technica's "Mole" is right—and it has been before—both consoles will be cheaper by the fall.

A relatively easy prediction, yes, but Ars' source lays out how it might go down, with the PS3 80GB model becoming more and more scarce. The constant bundling that Sony is doing at U.S. retail outlets will make sure that decrease in supply comes to fruition, about 2 months from now according to the Mole.

But the Xbox 360 retail offerings will also be changing, for the better value. According to the rumored price drop scenario, the Pro version of the Xbox 360 will phased out in favor of making the Elite the standard. Ars hints that another bundle configuration will hit before the holidays to replace the Elite, but doesn't offer specifics.

Does it all sound possible? Definitely. Will we get that PS3 "Slim" and a slightly modified rebrand? That sounds possible too.

Left 4 Dead Premium Theme Infecting New Official Xbox Mag

I'm kicking myself for not having subscribed to the Official Xbox Magazine, as subscribers are due to get a free Left 4 Dead premium theme to zombify their Xbox 360s. Wait, do I subscribe to OXM? I can never remember.

This nice little bonus for those of us who have turned their Xbox 360s into a dedicated Left 4 Dead player will almost assuredly spawn more anti-Valve sentiment because they're clearly wasting their time on themes and not precious campaigns. Please sign my petition.

Michael Jackson Has Died,,,Lets play Moonwalker On Sega Genesis

Musician and occasional video game contributor Michael Jackson has died at the age of 50. The "King of Pop" was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center this afternoon by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Jackson, in addition to being a bestselling pop artist with The Jackson 5 and as a solo act, was also featured in a number of video games, including one based on his short film Moonwalker. Developed by Sega for the arcade and Sega Genesis, the excellent Michael Jackson's Moonwalker was the start of a relationship that would see the musician later appear in Space Channel 5 and Space Channel 5: Part 2.

The pop musician was also rumored to have been recruited by Sega to contribute to music for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but his involvement was never credited nor confirmed by producer Yuji Naka. Jackson also made a cameo in Midway's Ready To Rumble: Round 2.

This year, the King of Pop was planned to have auctioned off a large number of items from his Neverland Ranch estate, including a wide variety of arcade games and consoles.

Michael Jackson is survived by three children.

Rock Band Weekly: Foreigner and more Warped Tour

Next week's Rock Band Weekly has been revealed through Harmonix's Rock Band "community zine," sent through the intertubes by email. The great thing about the zine is that it gives an idea of what tracks to expect next week. The problem is that it doesn't give prices for tracks or packs. We'd guess standard rates apply, but we can't say for sure right now. We'll update when the "official" announcement is made tomorrow and add prices.

Vans Warped Tour 3 Pack
  • "Sweet Talk" -- Dear and the Headlights
  • "Hey John, What's Your Name Again?" -- The Devil Wears Prada
  • "Image of the Invisible" -- Thrice
Foreigner Pack
  • "Little of Your Time"
  • "Makes Me Wonder"
  • "Wake Up Call"
Individual songs
  • "Weapon of Choice" -- Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
All tracks are likely available for download next Tuesday and Thursday on Xbox 360 and PS3, respectively.
